Eyes of Eve Cowell
Theater at Fort Mason Center San Francisco, April 10-11th, 2009- Eve's Elixir, an ongoing collaboration
of choreographers of contemporary world dance, will present its second incarnation at Cowell Theater at Fort
Mason. This year's choreographers include Ramon Ramos Alayo, Wan-Chao Chang, Tom Mayock, Riquezas flamenco company,
Hannah Romanowsky, and Holly Shaw, and will feature dance styles ranging from Indonesian and flamenco, to modern and
jazz. |
This
year's production, Eyes of Eve, focuses on a dialogue between modern and more traditional dances through
a kaleidescope of viewpoints. Broadening the definition of "world dance" to indeed include the world and all
its variety of dances, be they modern or "ethnic," Eyes of Eve blends ethnic dance and modern
dance together as our definitions of ethnicity expand and converge in the contemporary.
Each choreographer has been given the task of exploring a perspective, or the ways in which perspectives affect us; themes
range broadly from the fearful or exciting prospect of new love, the binding perspective of a painter upon a muse, and war
from the viewpoint of women and children. Children's voices, with their honesty and lack of social filters, will
weave together the pieces and add a youthful perspective by narrating the evening throughout.

Eve's Elixir Eve's Elixir is an ongoing project bringing together different choreographers
of contemporary world dance in collaboration and feedback sessions, culminating in an evening length performance of their
efforts. Inspired by the biblical Eve, they are taking risks with tradition, bringing new ideas to established
forms, and raising the question of what constitutes "authentic" world dance. Eyes of Eve is part
of the In Performance Series at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center, which is supported by Grants for the Arts/San Francisco
Hotel Tax Fund, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the
Fort Mason Foundation. Eve's Elixir is fiscally sponsored by the Dancers' Group. |
